A World of Technology

As I was walking to class today, the idea for this blog post hit me. I wanted to do a post about technology and how plugged in we are to our electronics. Pun intended.

From my residence to my class, it is about a 15-20 minute walk. I decided to start counting the number of people I saw on their phones as I walked to class. I didn't count the people using their phones for music. I began counting about a quarter of the way into my trek. By the time I reached my building, I had counted 51 people on their phones/mobile devices. 51 people. 51 people not paying attention to the world around them. 51 people absorbed in their tiny little phone screen. I was amazed at how many people ignored the present moment to be on their electronics.

Now, I'm not saying I don't ever use my phone/tablet when I'm bored, waiting for someone/thing, passing the time, etc., because I do. I absolutely do. I am just as invested in my electronics as everyone else. The biggest difference for me, is that I try not to use my phone when I could be enjoying the outdoors and the people around me, most of the time.

Just stop to think about what being on our electronics all of the time means. Think of all of the conversations that are missed because the participants are absorbed in their phones. All of the memories that are blurred by someone being on their phone. The opportunities missed because we are missing the world as it passes by. I am not a huge picture taker because I would much rather be living in the moment and enjoying the people around me; plus, I know that someone that is with me will be snapping away. This is not a bad thing because we also want to preserve our memories. Which leads me to my next thought.

How should we be using technology? What are appropriate situations or times when technology overload is called for?

Leave your thoughts in the comments, please! I would love to know what y'all think!

I know this was a lot different than what I normally do, but I think I'm going to start moving more toward posts about life and my views on life rather than just superficial things. Don't get me wrong, there will still be lots of fun ones! Maybe I'll do themed days? What do you think?

Thanks for sticking around and reading my ramblings!

xoxo
Rachel
