College Tip: BUY A PLANNER
For many, many years in school, I relied solely on my memory to remember all of my homework, upcoming tests and quizzes, and projects that were due within the week or two. It was pretty impressive if I do say so myself.
As the years went by, I found myself forgetting more and more (little) assignments. Finally, my dad said to me, "Why don't you use a planner? Then you won't have to try to remember everything."
"I'll never remember to use a planner!" I balked.
"Why don't we just try?"
I relented.
Fast forward about 5 1/2 years and look at me now. I rely heavily on my planner to get me through the day, even.
If you are like me and try to remember everything without writing it down, eventually you'll probably start to forget things. Hopefully not important things, but it may happen. I highly, highly suggest getting a planner, especially for college. It's not weird. About 90% of the people in your classes will have one.
They are tremendously handy for writing down assignments, exams, papers, and projects (duh), but in college, you really, really, really need to stay on top of those kinds of things. There may be a due date that's a month in advance for a paper, but you'll need to remember that. The day will probably come when that paper is due in a week, and if you didn't write down that due date, how would you know?
But how will I remember to use it? you may ask.
Well. That's a pretty easy one. Carry it around in your backpack with you! Before the semester starts and all of the syllabi are up online, take a day to go through each one and write down assignments and due dates for the ENTIRE semester. Sounds crazy, right? Well, better safe than sorry. Trust me, you won't regret doing that. If a date changes here or there, that's fine! You can just cross it off and move it.
When it's time to work on homework, I take out everything for that class. Notes, lectures, and my planner. I keep my planner out for however long I'm working. This helps me focus on the assignment at hand instead of trying to figure out which assignments I have next.
I use my planner for everything. I'd be lost without it. Appointments, hanging out with friends, weekend plans, work, etc. all goes in. That way, I don't have to try to remember every detail of every day. It's all written down for me!
Come up with an organization system that works for you! Of course, everyone is different and have different preferences. Play around with it and see what works for you.
See my planner here.
Mine is pretty fancy pants, but start out with a disposable one if you're unsure. I used a new one every academic year. They do make planners for financial years, calendar years, or academic years. If you don't want to commit to a really nice one, just get one from Walmart as a test run! I promise you won't regret the choice. It's a huge lifesaver and a great way to manage your time effectively!
That's all for today, long one, I know! If you have any questions, please feel free to ask!
Au revoir,
Rachel
