No Class!

This semester, I have Fridays free. That is a blessing sent directly from Heaven. I've only had one other semester where I had a day off from classes.

I know a couple freshmen who decided they wanted days off. I have mixed feelings about this, especially as a freshman.

1. I think it can be beneficial (sort of).
2. I think it can be a bit harmful (sort of).

Here's what I mean.

For the first point, it could be a great way to transition from high school to college. I think it could help reduce stress and make the overall academic, social, and mental stresses much easier to handle. These "days off" could give students more chance to work on the homework and get used to the amount of work that is required to be successful in college.

I never took days off as a freshman, so I don't know if this approach is actually helpful. Thinking about it now, I can see why some students choose to go this route.

For the second, I think it's good for students to immerse themselves completely. They get the full experience and learn the type of work ethic necessary. I think days off can give people the impression that they don't need to put in as much work as they think; I think this is especially true for underclassmen, when their schedules are packed with 5 or 6 different classes with a 15-18 credit course load.

This is the route that I went. It wasn't until my senior year that I finally had a semester with a free day, not that I didn't try for that sooner.

Now, as a grad student, I'm happy I have a day off because it will give me more time to work on the homework for the coming week. Seriously. The grad level work is much more in-depth and requires many more hours (I've spent the past two nights spending at least 4 hours working on homework, and that's just the start. I'm not complaining, I'm just illustrating the benefit of having a day off.

When you were in school, or if you're in school now, how do you/did you feel about days off from classes? I think as we progress through college, they are more beneficial.

Au revoir! À demain,
Rachel
